Chandigarh – The City Beautiful

Chandigarh, popularly known as the “City Beautiful”, is one of India's most distinctive urban destinations. Located at the foothills of the Shivalik Hills, Chandigarh is renowned for its carefully planned sectors, modern architecture, landscaped gardens, wide avenues, peaceful open spaces and unique combination of nature and urban planning.

Unlike most major Indian cities that evolved gradually over centuries, Chandigarh was conceived as a modern planned city after India's Independence. The city was planned under the leadership of the renowned French architect and urban planner Le Corbusier, along with architects including Pierre Jeanneret, Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew.

Today, Chandigarh has a unique administrative identity. It is a Union Territory of India and serves as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. It is also part of the Chandigarh Tricity, together with the neighbouring cities of Mohali in Punjab and Panchkula in Haryana.

With its modernist architecture, cultural attractions, gardens, lakes, museums, shopping areas and proximity to the Himalayan foothills, Chandigarh is an interesting destination for travellers looking for a combination of architecture, leisure, culture and city experiences.

Why Is Chandigarh Famous and Why Should You Visit?

Chandigarh is famous primarily for its planned urban design, modern architecture, gardens, Sukhna Lake and the works of Le Corbusier. It represents one of India's most important experiments in modern urban planning.

  • Planned City: Chandigarh was designed according to a systematic master plan with sectors, green spaces and a hierarchy of roads.
  • Le Corbusier Architecture: Several iconic buildings and urban spaces were designed under Le Corbusier's architectural vision.
  • Capitol Complex: The complex containing the Legislative Assembly, Secretariat and High Court is one of the city's most important architectural landmarks.
  • Rock Garden: Nek Chand's famous creation is one of Chandigarh's most unusual and popular attractions.
  • Sukhna Lake: A peaceful man-made lake that has become one of the city's signature recreational spaces.
  • Beautiful Gardens: Chandigarh has numerous gardens, green belts and landscaped public spaces.
  • Sector 17: The city centre is known for shopping, pedestrian spaces, restaurants and public activity.
  • Shivalik Foothills: The city's location provides scenic views towards the Shivalik range.
  • Modern Urban Planning: The city's sector-based planning and road hierarchy make it an important destination for architecture and urban-planning enthusiasts.

Chandigarh's official administration describes the city as one of India's significant experiments in urban planning and modern architecture of the twentieth century.

History of Chandigarh

Ancient Background

The region where Chandigarh is located has a much older history than the modern city itself. According to the Chandigarh Administration, the gently sloping plains were once associated with a large lake and marsh environment. Fossil remains discovered in the area indicate ancient aquatic and amphibian life, while archaeological evidence connects the region with the broader prehistoric landscape of the northwestern Indian subcontinent.

Chandigarh After Partition

The modern history of Chandigarh is closely connected with the Partition of India in 1947. Lahore, the former capital of undivided Punjab, became part of Pakistan. East Punjab therefore required a new capital.

The Government of Punjab, in consultation with the Government of India, approved the site for the new capital in March 1948. The location was selected for several reasons, including its position near the Shivalik foothills, availability of water, fertile land, natural drainage and proximity to Delhi.

Planning the New City

American planner Albert Mayer and architect Mathew Nowicki were initially commissioned to prepare the master plan. Their concept included neighbourhood units and a fan-shaped arrangement.

Following the death of Mathew Nowicki in an air accident, the project was subsequently assigned to a team led by Le Corbusier in 1951. He was assisted by Pierre Jeanneret, Maxwell Fry and Jane B. Drew, along with several Indian architects and planners.

Foundation of Chandigarh

The foundation stone of Chandigarh was laid in 1952. The new city was envisioned as a symbol of independent India's future and modern aspirations.

The city's planning was based on clearly defined sectors, roads, green spaces, public institutions and neighbourhood facilities. The original Phase I plan consisted of a grid of sectors with the Capitol Complex and city centre serving as important focal points.

Chandigarh Becomes a Union Territory

On 1 November 1966, the former state of Punjab was reorganised, resulting in the creation of Haryana and changes to the boundaries of Punjab. Chandigarh became a Union Territory and continued to serve as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana.

Geography of Chandigarh

Chandigarh is located in northwestern India at the foothills of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas. The city lies on gently sloping terrain and has an elevation of approximately 304 to 365 metres above sea level.

The Union Territory covers approximately 114 square kilometres and forms part of the Chandigarh Tricity with Mohali and Panchkula.

Chandigarh's location gives it a relatively green character, with extensive tree-lined avenues, parks, gardens, open spaces and the Sukhna Lake area.

Climate of Chandigarh

Chandigarh experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, a monsoon season and cool winters.

SeasonApproximate PeriodWeather
WinterNovember – FebruaryCool and pleasant, with cold mornings and evenings
SummerApril – JuneHot, with temperatures sometimes becoming very high
MonsoonJuly – SeptemberWarm, humid and rainy

The Chandigarh Administration identifies May and June among the hottest months, while January is generally the coldest. Southwest monsoon rainfall generally begins around late June and continues through the monsoon period.

Chandigarh's Unique Urban Planning

One of Chandigarh's most remarkable features is that the entire city was planned rather than allowed to grow organically.

The Sector System

The city is divided into planned sectors that function as neighbourhood units. Each sector was designed with residential areas, shopping facilities, open spaces and other amenities.

The official Edict of Chandigarh describes the sector as one of the fundamental elements of the city's planning philosophy, with approximately 800 metres by 1,200 metres dimensions for the standard sector.

The 7Vs Road System

Chandigarh's circulation network was designed using a hierarchy of roads known as the 7Vs. Different roads were assigned different movement functions, helping separate fast traffic from local neighbourhood movement.

This carefully planned circulation system remains one of the defining characteristics of Chandigarh's urban design.

City as a Human Body

Le Corbusier conceptualised Chandigarh using the analogy of a human body. The Capitol Complex represented the head, Sector 17 represented the heart, while the Leisure Valley and green spaces functioned as the city's lungs.

Residential sectors represented living, institutional areas represented intellectual activity and the circulation network formed the city's transportation system.
