History

Vellore has a long and complex history. The region was ruled at different times by the Pallavas, Cholas, Rashtrakutas, Sambuvarayars, Vijayanagara rulers, Nayaks, Marathas, Arcot Nawabs and the British.

Its strategic location made Vellore an important military and political centre. The city and surrounding region witnessed several important conflicts during the Carnatic Wars, including battles around Ambur, Arcot and Vandavasi during the 18th century.

The most famous historical landmark in the city is Vellore Fort. Official district records associate its construction with the Nayak period under the Vijayanagara Empire, particularly the rule of Chinna Bommi Nayak. The massive granite fort became one of the most important military strongholds in southern India.

Vellore Fort also occupies an important place in India's colonial history. In 1806, the Vellore Mutiny, also known as the Vellore Sepoy Revolt, broke out inside the fort. It is widely regarded as an important precursor to the larger uprising of 1857.

The city also became associated with the history of the Arcot Nawabs and the family of Tipu Sultan, whose relatives were confined within Vellore Fort after the fall of Srirangapatna.

Vellore developed a significant medical and educational identity in the 20th century. The establishment and growth of Christian Medical College and Hospital, founded through the work of Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, transformed Vellore into an important centre for medical education and healthcare.
