History of Uttar Dinajpur

The history of present-day Uttar Dinajpur is connected with the much older and larger Dinajpur region. The undivided Dinajpur area was historically associated with the ancient Pundra kingdom.

The region came under several major powers over the centuries. According to the district administration, the ancient Pundra territory was associated with the Mauryan Empire, followed by Gupta and Pala rule. Jainism also spread through the region in ancient times.

The ancient settlement of Kotibarsha, identified with present-day Bangarh, is an important part of the area's historical landscape. The region later came under the Sena dynasty before the conquest of Bengal by Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1204.

During the Mughal period, the region was incorporated into the administrative structure of Bengal. In 1765, control passed to the East India Company.

Colonial and Freedom Movement Period

The wider Dinajpur region witnessed the Sanyasi-Fakir rebellion during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In the early 20th century, people from Dinajpur participated in movements against the Partition of Bengal and later contributed to India's freedom struggle.

Formation of Uttar Dinajpur

After India's independence, the former Dinajpur district was divided in 1947, with the western part becoming West Dinajpur. On 1 April 1992, West Dinajpur was further divided into Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur.

Uttar Dinajpur today consists of two subdivisions, Raiganj and Islampur, with Raiganj serving as the district headquarters.
